Weight loss surgery is a form of surgery intended to help you lose with long term. It is a permanent procedure, which requires a big lifestyle change and a lifetime commitment. Surgeons won’t operate on you unless you’re prepared to change your lifestyle.

Weight loss surgery doesn’t just take away the weight, it also helps you to improve your overall health and well-being. Some weight loss surgeries limit the amount of food you can consume. Most people who have had the surgery lose weight rapidly. If they change their lifestyle and diet they can keep the excess weight off.

If there aren’t any complications with the surgery and you’ve followed your Surgeons advice then you should be able to resume to your normal life.

Types of Obesity Surgery:

Liposuction is the most well known weight loss surgery. It is a type of cosmetic surgery used to remove fat from parts of the body. It’s most commonly done on the stomach, thighs, bum but can be done anywhere.

With liposuction, a vacant tube and suction device break down the fat and suck it out. The amount of fat taken out of the body varies from patient to patient but it usually less than 5 kg.

Another well known surgery is a Gastric Bypass, it’s the most widely practiced weight loss surgery and is recommended by Doctors to people who are obese and have executed all other options. A gastric bypass operation involves creating a small stomach pouch and bypassing part of your small intestine to make your digestive system shorter, although nothing is actually removed. This means you can only eat smaller meals and so you absorb less food.

The recovery time of weight loss surgeries varies from person to person, but most people return to their normal life after a couple of weeks.

Although, the results of weight loss surgery can be drastic, there are some potential risks and complications:

Liposuction complications:

Infection
Extended healing time
Allergic reaction to medication or anaesthesia
Fat or blood clots - clots can migrate to the lungs and lead to death
Excessive fluid loss - fluid loss can lead to shock and, in some cases, death
Fluid accumulation - fluid must be drained
Friction burns
Damage to the skin or nerves
Damage to vital organs

Liposuction is a short term fix to a long term problem. If the person doesn’t make a permanent lifestyle change the fat will come back.

Gastric Bypass complications:

Infection - antibiotics are usually given during surgery to prevent infection.
Damage to other organs in your abdomen - you may need further surgery to repair any damage.
Bowel leak - the point where your intestine is re-joined to your stomach pouch could leak in the first few days and you may need further surgery to repair this.
Gallstones - there is a risk you may develop gallstones if you lose weight quickly. These can be painful and you may need surgery to remove them. Your surgeon may advise removing your gallbladder when you have your operation.
Failure to lose weight - it's possible you may fail to lose sufficient weight or regain weight after bypass surgery.

Again a lifestyle change has to be made before the operation. Many patients have put the weight back on despite only being able to eat smaller portions of food.

Weight loss surgery conclusion

Most people that are overweight don’t need surgery, it should only be used for very extreme cases if suggested by your Doctor. While many plastic surgeons will try to encourage and convince you that you need liposuction, they only want your money.

We believe that nobody needs surgery. They are only a short term answer to for what most people is a long term problem. With some education and change of lifestyle anyone can lose weight.
