Every now and again we take a look in the mirror and criticize our bodies. The internal thought process usually goes something like this: “My legs and tummy are looking bigger. It could be these clothes I’m wearing. Who am I kidding? I haven’t been watching what I eat recently and I’ve put loads of weight on.” The usual result of these moments of guilt is to swear off junk food and spend a few days eating healthy and searching the internet for solutions. This is how people find the latest dieting craze and promises to make anyone slim and improve your life.

Choose carefully

Unfortunately, when people accept that they have put some extra weight on they panic and search for the quickest way to lose the weight. This is a big mistake. A quick fix is exactly that and will never be anything else. Any long term problem that gets a quick fix never lasts. So instead of choosing the latest fad diet that promises rapid weight loss in a few days or weeks, go for the one that looks more sensible and looks like it will produce lasting results.

The “quick weight loss” diets are mostly based on losing water weight and lean tissue. This makes the dieter feel happier on the scales but they’re not losing the weight they need to – fat. This is silly because you will put the weight back on straight afterwards. You’re not trying to lose water weight or lean tissue so stay away from fad diets. Good, healthy diets take time to work and lose 1 – 2 lbs a week is a good rate. Losing more than 3 – 4 lbs a week is a big mistake that a lot of people make. At that rate you’re losing lean tissue which makes up your muscles. Lean tissue is an easier source of energy to break down than fat, which is why you lose it quicker. Slow diets will ensure maximum fat lass.

Problems

The main problem with quick weight loss schemes is that they usually turn into a vicious circle. The greater the muscle mass a person has, the faster their metabolism is and little or no food is stored as fat. But if a fad diet makes you lose mostly muscle mass then your metabolism slows down and stored fat is burnt at a much slower rate. What you think maybe a quick and easier solution actually makes it harder for you to lose weight in the long term. Starving yourself is also a bad idea because it slows down your metabolism and hangs on to the fat reserves because it doesn’t know when it will see food again.

Fad diets never last

It’s also important to eat the types of food that are going to give you enough energy to last through the diet. There’s a big difference between feeling hungry while you adjust to a different diet and feeling starving because you’re not eating enough. The food you eat gives you the energy to burn fat and increase your lean tissue. You can’t go jogging or go to the gym if you’re too weak and don’t have enough energy. So next time you search for a new fad diet, because to chose one that you can realistically stick to and will give you enough calories and nutrition. There’s a difference between a diet and starving.

I totally agree with this. Fad diets never work in the long term. personally i think that if your going to go on a diet you need to be able to see yourself on it for the rest of your life. Becasue as soon as you stop the diet u get fat again.
